PRENATAL MASSAGE THERAPY
Whether you are newly pregnant or 9 months and overdue, we can treat you! There are many changes going on in the pregnant body throughout each trimester, some of which can make life a little uncomfortable. Prenatal massage can help in many ways.
Massage in general increases blood flow. This is good because it decreases muscular tension and swelling. Some muscles tend to get tighter during pregnancy in order to stabilize joints. This is due to ligament laxity brought on by certain hormones. Circulation and nerve flow are also congested by the pregnant belly compressing the main vessels to the legs. Swelling in the lower limbs and feet or hands can be reduced. Varicose veins and other varicosities can benefit from regular massage therapy.
Massage therapy can help with headaches, back pain and calf cramps by decreasing muscular tension. Joint pain such as hip pain and SI joint instability can be treated as well as nerve pain and numbness caused by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Diastasis Recti, a splitting of the “6 pack” muscle in the abdomen can be assessed and treated. Postural correction, homecare exercises and instructions are also important in helping to keep joints in a neutral position. Pelvic floor assessment and exercises may also be given.
If you have a specific question about a “high risk” condition please email or call us, likely we have treated it before.
Our clinic has a specially designed pregnancy cushion system that allows a woman to safely lie on her stomach during a treatment. Most of our patients say that this position is very comfortable, and they wish they had a cushion like this at home! However, not everyone is alike. If this is not your cup of tea or it is not appropriate for you, we can treat you in a side-lying position supported by various bolsters and pillows or in a semi upright position. Your comfort is most important to us.
Pregnancy is a great time to take care of yourself, feel better and enjoy life before your little one arrives.
